Tissue-engineered vascular patches- update
A review article by Yale pediatric surgeons Chistopher Breuer and Tamar Mirensky, The Development of Tissue-Engineered Grafts for Reconstructive Cardiothoracic Surgical Applications, was recently published in Pediatric Research. Breuer and Mirensky survey research advances in tissue-engineered cardiac valves, tissue-engineered cardiovascular patches, and tissue-engineered vascular conduits. I found this to be a very useful overview.Image Source: NASA

Transplant experts debate ethics in Chicago

An article in the Chicago Tribune drew attention to an April 5th conference focusing on transplant ethics and bringing together doctors, psychologists, ethicists and others involved in the complex decision-making that surrounds distribution of a nationally scarce organs supply. Co-sponsored by the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine, the Chicago Transplant Ethics Consortium (CTEC), the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS), and Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, this conference will bring together multidisciplinary experts to present and discuss current key issues in organ donation, candidate selection, and other essential topics in transplantation. One of the goals of participants at the 21/2-day conference is to develop non-binding consensus positions on selecting transplant recipients, as well as recommendations for solicitation and compensation of living donors.

Surgical Technology International- What do you think?

Please send me comments about any experience you have had with this publication, either as an author or reader. Yale does not have a subscription, but a publisher's representative has contacted me. I am a little concerned about how the products of surgery relate to the reported research. Is there overt competing interest? You can email me or fill out a blog comment....
